Balance Tank and Screen Installation
This Civil & Environmental project was managed by Simon, who was appointed as Site Manager with responsibility for overseeing and delivering the works on behalf of the Principal Contractor. Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM), Civil & Environmental assumed full responsibility for the planning, management, coordination, and execution of the construction phase on behalf of the client.
As Site Manager, Simon was responsible for the planning, management, and coordination of all health and safety activities throughout the construction phase. Key duties included conducting contractor inductions, issuing permits to work, enforcing site safety regulations, supervising subcontractors, monitoring project progress against programme milestones, and maintaining effective communication with the client and project stakeholders.
The project involved the replacement of several balance tanks and screening equipment that had reached the end of their operational life and had been condemned due to their age and condition.
The first phase of the works consisted of demolishing the redundant tanks and removing accumulated fat and sludge deposits that had solidified over approximately 30 years of operation. A total of 200 tonnes of waste material was removed and transported to a local energy recovery facility for anaerobic digestion and processing.
The second phase involved the construction of a reinforced concrete slab and containment bund wall to ensure compliance with CIRIA C736 guidelines. Following completion of the civil works, a steel access platform was erected to support the screening equipment and provide safe operational and maintenance access to the balance tanks.
The final phase included the installation and commissioning of two glass-coated steel balance tanks complete with mixers, two sludge storage tanks, one rotary screen, and two feed pumps. The completed installation provided a modern, compliant, and efficient solution for the site’s wastewater treatment process.
In addition to his responsibilities as Site Manager, Simon also fulfilled the role of Appointed Person for all crane lifting operations, ensuring that lifting activities were properly planned, risk assessed, and executed in accordance with relevant legislation and industry best practice. Simon was also the lead fabricator for the project, undertaking the fabrication and installation of all stainless steel pipework and containment systems, ensuring high standards of quality, functionality, and compliance throughout the works.
